An Elegant Book

The Elegance of the Hedgehog…

Muriel Barbery

A more peculiar title I have never seen and I was perplexed by its cryptic cover.

At first I was apprehensive about reading it. But once I had cracked the book, it wasn’t hard to keep reading. To give a synopsis of the story would sound coarse and unrefined compared to the grace of its telling and the clear pictures behind every word. (Which, by the way, made me laugh as much as think. I love a good sentence and this thing was full of really good sentences.) I It follows the lives of a young genius and a middle-aged clandestine intellectual. They manage to defy every caste rule of their haughty surroundings and struggle against other people’s perception. (See, I told you it would be rough.)

Again, not the normal book I would have picked up, but I am so glad my sister pushed me into it because it was an enjoyable read like I never could have expected.

Writers Read

Another of my favorite books to read is in Eoin Colfer’s Artemis Fowl series. It follows the child genius and criminal mastermind, Artemis Fowl. He discovers that fairies, centaurs, and dwarfs actually do exsist and what else can he do but contrive a way to steal from them. I do love this series as it takes several unique characters with unique situations and brings them unique problems to solve. It helps that one of them is brilliant, one of them is clever, one of them is brawny (several are mouthy) . . . pick a subject, there is probably one counted of their number to fulfill any personality type.
